Process of Shi Yang

Feb 2022

January 25, 2022 to Feb 9 2022 (respectively 1/25, 1/26, 2/2,2/3, 1/28?, 2/9)

I always start with the background, the shapes and colors of the big items, them I get to do the fun parts of adding details to the main bodies. I later touched up the important areas and then really had fun with the outlines and details. Once the immediately eyecatching parts were out of the way, I focused on the background details. Lastly, I got carried away with clouds. So in practice I go : Basics back to front, then details front to back.

A small aside: I have the pleasure of knowing a lot of other very talented people and one of them was writing a musical.

That person had inspired me previously. When they shared they were writing a musical about the famous pirate queen, I knew I wanted to create this peice in support of their artistic motivaton.

There was a lot of research that needed to be done on boats of the era, her vessel, and styles that reflect respect towards Chinese culture.

The peice took weeks to create. It was invigorating. Being my second time ever attempting to paint ocean waves, and the largest canvas I had ever tackled at the time, I still wanted to finish it before traveling to see them that year.
